Dr. Renatta Varma was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan medical school with Great Distinction. She completed her residency in ophthalmology at the University of the Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and holds a fellowship from The Royal College of Physicians of Canada. She then completed a fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery in New Orleans, Louisiana under Dr. Gholam Peyman, who holds the patent for LASIK surgery. She completed a second fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery in Victoria, BC.  She began practicing in Regina in 2006 as a retinal specialist with a special interest in cataract surgery. She was a refractive surgeon at Horizon Laser Vision Center from 2006 to 2020 and their Medical Director from 2009 until present. She is a member of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retinal Surgeons and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. She has performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries, 3,000 retinal surgeries and 6,000 laser refractive surgeries. She is the current Board Chair of the CNIB.
